Survival rates from the 11 March 2011 tsunami across the more than 100 villages and towns on Tohoku's coast varied significantly, as have the processes of rebuilding homes, schools, infrastructure, and businesses. In some communities as many as 1/10 of the population passed away, while in others no one did. Some towns, villages, and towns have restored gas lines, schools, and businesses, while others seem frozen in time. This data-driven talk looks at the factors underlying the mortality during and survival from the compound disaster. Social capital – the connections between residents – serve as a critical factor both in saving lives and accelerating recovery.
